Getting Child Support

The Process of Obtaining Child Support

1) Establish Paternity

If you are not married to the father, establishing paternity is the first step.

2) Obtain a Child Support Order

The Child Support Order is a document from a court that states:

  • When
  • How often
  • How much

A parent is to pay for child support.

The Child Support Order is usually part of the divorce decree or paternity judgment.

3) Collect Support

If a parent is delinquent and neglects his or her responsibility of paying child support, having the Court Order is the first step in obtaining child support.

If your child is under 18 years old, contact the Child Support Enforcement Agency in your state. They must help you collect the child support.
